Loving in Relationships: Maximizing Emotional Connections
Why is it that relationships falter? When I say I love you, what happens on a daily basis that proves or disproves that vow of love? How does the emotional closeness happen? What causes emotional distance? How is it that actions speak louder than words, yet words are also the cornerstone of understanding one another? How do I show love, communicate love, and live lovingly amidst the daily challenges, disappointments and gaps in conscious connection? Is it even possible to create and nurture these consistently loving bonds? What do we do with the misunderstandings and the disconnects?
Love is always the answer, and in all ways love must be the most prominent reality of my life. It is so easy to lapse into unconscious patterns, to evade the issues, to sidestep the small opportunities to meaningfully connect. There are excuses and habitual patterns that interfere with loving and emotionally nurturing interactions. Examples include:
· Too much busyness
· Failure to recognize the importance of the mundane events and interactions
· Faulty perceptions
· Avoidance of potential conflicts
· Unwillingness to relate on a deeper level
· Not knowing how or where to begin the conversation
· Fear of intimacy
· InexperienceThese and other factors enter into the loving relationship and create distance. We create gaps in communication related to our fears, insecurities, doubts, desires, dreams, goals, and especially our feelings. These gaps are the entry points for negativity, hidden agendas, resentments and sabotage. As the gaps grow, there are persistent undertones of lack.
